Coined the “Athens of the West” during frontier days, Lexington inherited a rich, vibrant history that is celebrated and evident in the city’s culture today. From known Civil War leaders and political orators who were active participants in shaping our country to the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Lexington is home to a wealth of history ripe for the telling.
Known as the ‘Horse Capital of the World’, Lexington boasts a long history and tradition of horse breeding, training and racing. Fed by a limestone foundation, the fertile grasses in the Central Kentucky region provide the perfect nourishment and environment for horses. Known as the “Bluegrass State”, the fertile grounds have attracted many horse dynasties throughout history, such as Calumet Farm and Hamburg Place. The picturesque pastures of the area horse farms are signature Kentucky, with white fencing and historic rock fences (built by Irish immigrants in the 1800’s) lining the rolling hills.
The Downtown Lexington Tour traverses through one the most beautiful and historic areas in the city. We’ll see the Kentucky Walk of Fame, the historic Gratz Park Inn and neighborhood, the Carnegie Library, the John Hunt Morgan Home, Transylvania University Campus, the Bodley-Bullock Home, the historic Cheapside District, the Old Courthouse, Henry Clay’s original law office and Victorian Square. A few stories and a bit of historic information is provided as we stroll along to provide the most ‘tasteful’ and enjoyable walking tour possible.
